Tuesday, January 31, 2006A Moment Please"Last night, the great civil rights leader Coretta Scott King passed away at the age of 78":( Sad. Please take a moment today to pause in memory. If not of Ms. Scott King, then in memory of someone who for a moment crossed through your life. I shall have to make the next memory I write, the one of when I met Coretta Scott King. Monday, January 30, 2006Airplane Stories #3: Sunset flightOne of the most beautiful sites I've seen was while flying. I got on my flight from Detroit to Boston without much thought. I was heading home from visiting the family, as I did often enough. I don't remember how old I was, but I was flying alone and was well old enough to.It just so happened my flight ended up being in the air as the sun set, a rare event. I recall thinking at the time how that was the first time for me. Well, I happened to glance up from my book to look out the window, and the sky behind the plane was gorgeous. At that high up there were no clouds in the way, no skyline to block or obscure things. Just the sun and the horizon, and all the cascading colors between the sun's orange-yellow and the shades of night blue surrounding the plane and I. I had to crane my neck to look back to see the sun and watch it set because we were traveling East (from Detroit to Boston after all). But I kept doing so because it was so pretty I didn't want to look away. Even as the engine on the wing behind me partially blocked the view, and when I had to press my face against the window just to be able to half see the later stages of the sunset, I kept doing so. From the ground a beautiful sunset requires clouds for the colors of the setting sun to light up. From the sky, I can only surmise that something dealing with the varying thicker atmosphere below and thinner above gave way to the crisp and clear beauty. Sadly, my memory of how that sunset looked has faded. I have a better memory of another absolutely beautiful sunset with cascading colors while I worked at Biosphere II. I took pictures of that one, but they don't at all do it justice. I guess sometimes the beauty of nature simply can't be captured by technology. |
