   So Aphresis (platelet) donation is all filled up for my birthday here in Ann Arbor. I’m on the float list in case someone cancels. There’s an opening to donate aphresis in Berkley that Monday, but it’s an hour away. *sigh* I don’t like the feeling of hoping someone cancels so I can donate, that doesn’t really help those in need. If I donated in addition to everyone else that day it’d be so much better! Do I drive an hour each way to donate, or do I just donate whole blood instead? Aj, any insight for this dilemma?

   well, I’m kinda psyched to see someone have this kind of dilemma…
   out of curiosity, is there a reason you need to donate that day? Could you donate on a different day? Since platelets only have a 5-day shelf life, my first instinct is to suggest donating the platelets on a different day in Ann Arbor, because they’re all desperately needed all the time. However, if you’re a regular platelet donor, and that’s the only day that you’re available to give, go ahead and give whole blood, and go back to platelets when you’re eligible again. We need it all, so it’s not as if it’s a wasted donation, and driving to Berkley seems excessive, even for a donation.

   The original reason for that day is it’s my birthday, and I want my present to myself to be donating blood.

   Secondarily, I have that day off work while daycare is open for Amber (doesn’t happen much at all). With a young toddler it’s hard to donate even whole blood, forget aphresis. And Ann Arbor only has aphresis donations on Mondays.

   I really want to get back into donating regularly. I used to do platelets/plasma faithfully every month. I’d love to again. Though whole blood every six weeks might be more realistic. But since I have the free day, it’d be great to kick my getting back to donate off with aphresis!

   Thanks for the input. I’ll be thinking on it.
