I Made Baby Food

First impression: I’m in over my head

First I made Banana. One ripe banana did not puree well, even in my new fancy blender! Now that it’s all over, I think perhaps I should have put some water in with it. Eh, maybe next time.
Turnout: One slightly larger than average banana made about 3 oz of baby food.
Cost: at $0.48 it costs the same as pre-made banana step 1 baby food.

Next ready was the Bartlett Pear. I boiled/steamed it. Peeling the skin was not strenuous, but eh. It pureed very well! Tasted good too! To me anyway.
Turnout: One average sized bartlett pear made a little more than 5 oz of baby food! Woo!
Cost: at $0.89 it costs a little less than pre-made pear step 1 baby food.

I put the Nectarine back on to boil/steam longer. Peeling the skin was still a bit of an issue. Pureeing went okay. Tasted fine, I guess.
Turnout: One non-large nectarine made just under 2.5 oz of baby food.
Cost: at $0.55 it costs more than pre-made peaches step 1 baby food.

Golden Delicious Apples bake faster than Red! The skin even popped off the apple while in the oven before I got to it! 400 degrees, 40 minutes = too long. But then again maybe not. The apple pureed well! Tasted bland to me though.
Turnout: One average sized golden delicious made about 5 oz of baby food. Good.
Cost: at $0.85 it costs less than pre-made applesauce step 1 baby food.

Red Delicious Apples were a disappointment Even after baking for 40 minutes at 400 degrees the skin didn’t want to come off. Though it was a whole lot easier to cut off with a (dull!) knife than if not baked. Still the apple did NOT puree well. I had to add water. Tasted just a little better than golden puree (though the skin tasted GREAT!).
Turnout: One average sized red delicious made just under 5 oz of baby food. Not worth the effort.
Cost: at $0.87 it costs less than pre-made banana step 1 baby food.

Overall: It took way longer than I expected, but interesting! Glad I’m feeling so much better tonight. But is the about 5 cents a serving (for pears and apples) in savings worth my time?

All in all, we need to wait to see what Amber’s opinions are! ;)

I hope she likes the home grown foods you are trying. The only thing I would say is check with a nutrition doctor. Some of the pre-made foods have higher levels of nutrients than the normal foods without, i.e. The bananas have about 50% more potassium in the pre-made over the homemade, Now if Amber doesn’t need that extra because she is in good health, what you are doing in making the homemade stuff does give you control of what she puts in her mouth and is a great idea… As long as she likes it. Let me know, I am curious. Keep up the great mommy work.
