Thursday, April 09, 2009Our fist visually observed exoplanet - Awesome! From BBC News images:
"Fomalhaut b, the first visually observed exoplanet, sits inside the giant disc of dust that surrounds the planet's parent star. (Paul Kalas/UC Berkeley; STScI)" That means, the planet circled in the close up of the image above is the first planet outside of our solar system to actually be seen! (instead of only found by some scientific measurement) WAY COOOL! Labels: Space Comments

I should hope that it's currently on the phone with it's agent and seeing about getting a better name. ;)

I'm having trouble finding a suitable one, partly because Wikipedia doesn't do much to separate "myth" (which I consider to mean "ancient religion no longer really practiced by anyone") and "religion" and my feeling is that planets should be named after deities from myth as naming a planet after a deity who is still worshipped might be considered offensive or sacreligious. I'd like to get away from the Greco-Roman pantheon, but I can't shake the appropriateness of calling it Vulcan. Not so much in the Roman myth sense, since I believe astronomers wanted to use the smith god's name for a theoretical planet that's closer to the sun than Mercury, but more in the Star Trek sense. We could also call it Pluto, since there's no longer a planet using it, though that might get a little confusing. |
