Headlines Recently

Outside of the Flight 1549 crash into the Hudson River, there have been a bunch of headlines recently that have interested me. Unfortunately AOL news doesn't keep articles up after a certain amount of time (:p), so where I can I'm linking to other versions of the same headlines that I hope will live out. I'm going to put the science stuff in it's out post.

One, that saddens me, is that the Wedgewood/Waterford company has gone into the equivalent of bankruptcy. "LONDON (Jan. 5)- Waterford Wedgwood PLC, the maker of classic china and crystal, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday after attempts to restructure the struggling business or find a buyer failed."

Wedgewood has been part of my life since before I was! My Mom has a ton of wedgewood. As little ones, my brother and I knew it has "Mom's blue stuff" and most definitely not to touch! If that part of the company goes under, that's what would really sadden me. It's been around for 250 years as of this year! So much history, and it's so unique even today. And Waterford started in Ireland, the factory is still there, my Mom visited it when she was in Ireland last year. Waterford is such wonderful crystal, it'd be a shame to loose that company.

But, there are always happy baby stories!

Baby born during trans-Atlantic flight to Boston - "There were 124 passengers on Northwest Airlines Flight 59 when it left the Netherlands. There were 125 when it landed in Boston." How a woman 9 months pregnant got on a plane, I don't know, but it's a cool story!

Baby Born With 12 Fingers and 12 Toes - "...little Kamani was born with a spectacularly rare case of polydactyly -- extra digits -- that .... Baby Kamani has 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot, KTVU.com reported. Genetic traits like these can run in families, but having extra digits that are functional, as Kamani's are, is extremely rare."

My Mom had six fingers on each hand at birth, but non-functional, so the doctors removed them. I believe her brother had them too, but not her sister, and Ma (her mother) had some variation as well that weren't removed until she was in her teens. So my family on my mother's side carries the trait, which means Michael and I probably have it too. But not a functional extra digit version... supposedly!

Lastly, the power of programming:
