I suppose the other part of it is that I look around, and have to wonder if it's really worth the pain. Everyone leaves, someday. Wether it's a relationship gone bad early, or a years long one, or even if a couple remains together happily until one of them dies. I've seen people going through such things, and honestly I have no desire to be in that kind of pain. I know being in love is wonderful, but the further in love you are the more it will hurt when the other leaves.

All in all, I think the reason is one of simple protection of myself.
